Conference Schedule

Morning Report (7:00-8:00 a.m. M-Th)

An interesting case is presented to our assistant program director, Raj Lakhia, DO. The diagnosis is unknown or withheld and the emphasis is on how to approach the topic to develop a differential diagnosis. This interactive conference also covers interpretation of diagnostic tests to narrow the diagnosis and treatment considerations.

Team Rounds (8:00 - 9:00 a.m)

Medical students, residents, and ward attending meet together to discuss interesting patients cases with the focus on recent admissions. Senior residents organize presentations from all involved. The group will experience bedside teaching when notable physical findings are relevant to discussion.

Critical Care/ICU Rounds

First year residents present each patient to the team which is lead by an intensivist/pulmonologist. These bedside rounds provide a wealth of learning as multi-system disease management is performed. Cardiologists also participate in rounds as needed.

Noon Conference (12:00-1:00 p.m. daily)

The Core curriculum is covered during these daily lunch conferences. Outstanding presentations from internal medicine subspecialties such as cardiology, gastroenterology, and rheumatology as well as non medicine disciplines are given. The series is designed to cover all major internal medicine topics and to prepare the learner for practice as well as for internal medicine boards. Residents also experience discussions in ethics and practice management.

Patient Management Presentations (12:00 - 1:00 p.m. daily)

These are senior resident presentations that begin with a patient case and thoroughly review a disease topic. This academic exercise will familiarize the learner with literature review, creating presentations, and speaking skills.

Ambulatory Case Report (12:00 - 1:00 p.m. daily)

Residents present a brief patient case from their clinic experience in which a question arose. The resident reviews relevant literature to give a thirty minute review of the topic to his/her fellow residents. These are very practical talks designed to assist residents in day to day management of their outpatients.

Journal Club

Each month a subspecialty of medicine is highlighted at the journal club presentation. A senior resident facilitates a critical examination of an original research publication. All residents are encouraged to participate and improve their ability to read and interpret the medical literature.

Radiology Rounds

The attending radiology staff present x-ray films, CT scans and MRI's to illustrate general concepts in radiologic interpretation. Residents are given a standardized approach to reading and understanding tests commonly ordered for internal medicine patient care.

Pathology Conference (Tumor Board)

These conferences examine clinical cases with extensive review of the pathophysiology in order to correlate the anatomic findings to the clinical course. Attending oncologists, radiologists, and pathologists present interesting cases monthly.

Patient Safety Conference

Third year residents each give a noon conference focusing on the science of patient safety and practice improvement.

Noninvasive Cardiology Conference (monthly)

This conference brings the residents together with the Department of Cardiology to review interesting EKG's and echocardiograms. This conference is hightly interactive and very intructional.
