About the Program

About the Program

The Christ Hospital Internal Medicine Residency Program offers the perfect choice for comprehensive training and a solid foundation for any medical practice.  In May 2007 we received continued accreditation from the ACGME (Accredidation Council for Graduate Medical Education).

Residents Residents train with attending physicians, both community-based and hospital-based, in a large, not-for-profit hospital that offers a wide variety of patient experience.

Our teaching faculty members are committed to sharing their expertise.  Ongoing interaction between residents and attending physicians often leads to practice opportunities as residents complete training. Residents have the opportunity to work with attendings in both private practice and at the hospital.

Flexibility within our program encourages residents to tailor rotations according to thier professional interests. With extensive ancillary services provided, residents find more time to concentrate on learning the skills needed to practice Internal Medicine.

The Christ Hospital Department of Internal Medicine shares a close relationship with the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine by providing rotations for second, third and fourth-year medical students. The Christ Hospital provides teaching opportunities for University of Cincinnati residents in general surgery, family medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, neurosurgery, radiology, anesthesiology and radiation oncology.

Our teaching staff in the Department of Internal Medicine includes general internists as well as sub-specialists in cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, geriatrics, hematology/oncology, infectious diseases, nephrology, neurology, pulmonology and rheumatology. The staff delegates patient care responsibilities to our residents and supervises and evaluates their performance. In addition, specialists in other medical fields such as dermatology, ob/gyn, ophthalmology, otolaryngology and orthopedics open their offices to residents in our training program. Many of our teaching staff hold faculty appointments at the University of Cincinnati. All of our faculty members are board certified.

Excellent Training, Supportive Environment

There are approximately 30 residents in our program. This size encourages residents to work together with a sense of camaraderie and cooperation – an environment conducive to educating and training residents in all three years of the program.  Our current board pass rate is 96%.

Team Composition

On the general and subspecialty medical units, a PGY-2 or PGY-3 resident acts as the team leader for five PGY-1 residents and Acting Interns. Another senior resident serves as the assistant team leader. This resident’s duties include one-on-one teaching and supervision of acting interns. They are also responsible for contribution to the case-based learning process by bringing  literature to rounds. Acting Interns are fourth-year medical students from the University of Cincinnati and other medical schools.  They take call and care for patients as a PGY-1 resident. Third-year medical students also comprise the team and work closely with PGY-1 residents.

In the MICU, a PGY-3 resident serves as a team leader with a PGY-2 resident to assist. The team is comprised of five PGY-1 residents.  The MICU team works closely with a board certified pulmonary/critical care attending in the hospital's closed ICU.

On the wards, residents have close contact with numerous attending physicians, both in General Internal Medicine and in the medical subspecialties.  Every month each team has two attending physicians, one general internist and one subspecialist who conduct daily teaching rounds with the entire team. These sessions are case-based discussions of patients that the residents and students have admitted. Residents also communicate closely with the various attending physicians of their assigned patients.
